Joseph Romanyshyn


Joseph Romanyshyn, 90, Fairfield, died Saturday, November 3, 2018 surrounded by his family at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Joe’s Divine Liturgy will be will be at 10 a.m., Thursday November 8, 2018 at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Fairfield with Fr. Ivan Shkumbatyuk celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fairfield. Visitation will be Wednesday, at Ladbury Funeral Service from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a rosary led by Myron Romanyshyn and Panakhyda at 7 p.m. with Deacon Leonard Kordonowy presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Joseph was born April 14, 1928 on the family farm near Fairfield, son of Nicholas and Anna (Olienyk) Romanyshyn. He was raised and educated in the Fairfield area, having attended the Casper School and one year at Model High in Dickinson. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Kowis on November 14, 1950 in Grassy Butte at St. Peter Canisius Catholic Church.

He farmed until 1971 when he moved to Denver, Colo. and worked at the Redfield Rifle Scope Company and later the Clark Floor Machine Company which he retired from in 1992. Joe returned to North Dakota and started farming again.

Joe belonged to the Ukrainian Cultural Institute. He liked playing the sweepstakes, giving to charitable organizations, reading religious material and giving his children good advice. He also enjoyed tinkering with tractors and machinery to make them work. Although Joe was a home body, he loved going to church and visiting with people over a good meal.

Joe is survived by five children, Renee (special friend Bob Dutchuk) Serhienko, Dickinson, Robert Romanyshyn, Dickinson, Ramona (Sherman) Romanyshyn-Guimont, Denver, Regina Romanyshyn, Killdeer, and Roxanna (Scott) Privratsky; Devils Lake; six grandchildren, Stacey (Curtis) Dicken, Wendy Serhienko, Shiloh Guimont, J.J. Guimont, Tessa (Josh) Lagein, and Ashley (Ryan) Dressler; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Serhienko, Alexa Dicken, Lola Lagein, Calvin Lagein, and “the boss” Jordan Parker Guimont; and numerous special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rachelle Romanyshyn; his parents; and ten siblings, Julia Hurinenko, Eugene Romanyshyn, Mercy Anheluk, Katie Mularchek, Marie Petryszak, Philip Romanyshyn, Bill Romanyshyn, Steve Romanyshyn, Mike Romanyshyn, and Tena Romanyshyn.
